Wordt gevraagd om mijn top 10 single quinta op te sommen Poorten is bijna net zo ontmoedigend als het vooruitzicht mijn favoriete nummers te moeten kiezen voor de Desert Island Discs van Radio 4. Met alle dramatische wendingen van de rivier de Douro en zijn zijrivieren, zijn er zoveel fascinerende eigendommen: sommige prominent, andere verborgen. Sommige zijn kleine boerderijen (voor eigen gebruik of hobby-gekweekt), andere zijn statiger, en niets meer dan Quinta do Vesúvio in de Douro Superior die meer dan 300 hectare beslaat.
De focus voor dit artikel is single quinta vintage Port (SQVP), maar als de groeiende categorie van onversterkte Douro-wijnen in de vergelijking zou worden opgenomen, zou ik een andere top 10 hebben gekozen met enkele even betoverende landgoederen, zoals Quinta do Vallado, Quinta do Vallado, Quinta do Vallado, Quinta do Vallado, Quinta do Vallado, Quinta do Vallado do Crasto, Quinta do Vale Meão en Ferreira's Quinta da Leda - in dat geval zullen ze allemaal zeker op mijn shortlist staan.
Sommige van de onderstaande eigendommen (zoals Quinta do Noval, Quinta de la Rosa en Quinta do Vesúvio) zijn op zichzelf al verladers geworden en produceren een scala aan wijnen (zowel Port als Douro), evenals een enkele Quinta Vintage Port, bijna elke jaar. Anderen zijn een belangrijk onderdeel van grotere verladers zoals Graham's, Sandeman of Taylor's, en in aangegeven jaren draagt hun output bij aan de vintage Port-melanges van hun huis.
Het behoeft geen betoog dat al deze wijngaarden als klasse ‘A’ zijn geregistreerd in het officiële classificatiesysteem dat bepaalt hoeveel Port elk landgoed in een jaar kan verdienen.
Op het moment van schrijven heeft de Douro zojuist een van zijn heetste jaren ooit meegemaakt. Na een opeenvolging van hete jaren (en dreigende klimaatverandering), valt nog te bezien of hoogte in de komende jaren een voordeel kan worden (hogere hoogten zijn een ongunstige factor in het huidige classificatiesysteem).
